The section of line south of Erfurt

The structural work for this section of line from Ilmenau to the point where it joins the existing network at the western approach to Erfurt (about 40 km in total) has been completed since 2005. The outstanding structures from south to north include the Wümbach Viaduct, which is 570 metres long and 42 metres high, the Sandberg Tunnel (1,320 metres), the Behringen Tunnel (465 metres), the 1,121-metre Gera Viaduct at Ichtershausen, the 1,404-metre Augustaburg Tunnel and the 322-metre Gera Viaduct at Erfurt-Bischleben.

The new line's most important structures have been under construction since 2008/09. The Erfurt rail junction links the new lines 8.2 and 8.1. The new passenger station of the future ICE junction has been in operation since the end of 2008.
