The Maintal flood channels
The new/deepened flood channels take the place of the withdrawn flood storage space in the immediate vicinity of the Maintal valley. Shallow depressions are dug in the immediate vicinity of the dam and landscaped in order to optimize water management and enhance their visual attraction. This artificially-created channel system for flood discharge enhances the natural organic shapes of the channels. A total of nine channels are connected to each other or with the Main, so that flood water can be optimally distributed at high water levels. Approximately 250,000 m³ of earth has been moved and the ground lowered by an average of approx. 1.0 m to create the channels.
Once construction of the railway embankments and bridges for the ICE line is complete, the flood channels will be seeded and trees planted to create a semi-natural woodland with lots of green spaces.
