Electronic signalling centre with track layout redesign

The upgrade of the Halle hub involves thorough modernisation of the track layout and systems. The most important part of the project is the improvement of the existing track layout and equipping the entire hub with an electronic signalling system and a new catenary system.

The upgrade includes the provision of new track, overhead line equipment, points, signal boxes, level crossings and railway bridges. Old signal boxes will be replaced by modern systems. In future, several new electronic signal boxes – linked to the Leipzig control centre – will control rail traffic through the Halle hub.

The platforms at Halle (Saale) Hauptbahnhof are being rebuilt to accommodate the upgraded track layout, the standard train lengths ordered and the prospective use. The upgraded track layout is the reason for platform reconstruction. The future-proof infrastructure and the simplification of the track layout will ultimately contribute to cutting the maintenance outlay for the structural and technical installations. The project will also comply with the latest European standards, TSIs (technical specifications on interoperability), which are legally-binding technical regulations, issued by the European Commission. They apply to rail traffic across Europe, in order to secure interoperability, i.e. a consistently-operated railway system. They cover platforms, energy, train control and train safety, amongst other things.
