The construction work on the section of line between Nuremberg and Fürth began on August 10th, 2006 with a groundbreaking ceremony at the Rothenburger Straße railway bridge and will continue until the end of 2011.
Between Nuremberg and Fürth the line is being upgraded from two to four tracks. This will relieve the 7.6 kilometre bottleneck between Nuremberg and Fürth and permit speeds of up to 160 km/h. Another part of the project involves removing 24 level crossings. As of June 2007, 11 level crossings had already been removed in preliminary work. Planning activities and planning approval processes are ongoing for a further nine level crossings.
